Finding Gratitude Through Adaptation: A New Year Reflection

New Year—a chance to pause and reflect on the previous year as well as look forward to this coming one. For those of us in the adaptive community, this reflection often takes on a unique perspective. As amputees, our journeys are marked by challenges, but they’re also brimming with triumphs, growth, and incredible opportunities to connect with others.

I want to start my year by focusing on gratitude as it relates to adaptation: the ways we’ve learned, grown, and thrived through the challenges we’ve faced over the past year!

Thankful for Our Bodies’ Resilience

Our bodies are incredible. Even after significant changes, they adapt in ways we never imagined. Every new milestone, whether it’s mastering a prosthetic, walking confidently, or trying something new like cycling or running, is worth celebrating. Adaptation is a testament to our resilience.

This year, I’m thankful for my body allowing me to try something new - mountain biking! This was truly a test on my agility, strength, and balance! I love that i am able to try new things and be active!

Thankful for Innovation and Technology

The world of prosthetics, mobility aids, and adaptive devices is continually evolving. Each innovation empowers us to live more independently and pursue activities we love. I think back to the prosthetic feet I’ve tried over the years—each one was a stepping stone (literally!) to becoming more confident and capable.

I’m grateful for the researchers, designers, and engineers who pour their time and passion into creating tools that change lives. Their work reminds us that the human spirit and ingenuity are limitless.

This past year I participated in prosthetic research! I am thankful for the opportunity that I got to experience innovation in a field that drastically impacts my life!

Thankful for the Adaptive Community

Perhaps the greatest blessing of being an amputee is the sense of community. Whether it’s meeting someone who truly understands the day-to-day challenges or being inspired by another person’s determination, the adaptive community is a space filled with strength, humor, and empathy.

I’m thankful for the connections I’ve made—both online and offline—with people who inspire me to push boundaries, share openly, and embrace this unique life.

Thankful for Personal Growth

Adaptation pushes us in ways we don’t expect. I’ve learned patience, problem-solving, and self-advocacy as an amputee. I’ve also gained a deeper appreciation for the little things: a steady walk, a well-fitting socket, or simply the chance to enjoy life without constant pain.

While the challenges haven’t always been easy, they’ve helped me grow into a stronger, more self-aware version of myself. For that, I am deeply thankful.

Thankful for the Everyday Moments

Sometimes, gratitude comes in the quiet, ordinary moments: a laugh with family, a sunny walk, or a meal shared with loved ones. As amputees, we know the value of making the most of these small joys.

No matter where you are in your journey, I hope this season reminds you of your resilience, your growth, and the incredible community of support around you. From my family to yours, Happy New Year. May your day be filled with gratitude and joy!

Feel free to share what you’re thankful for this year—I’d love to hear your reflections.
