Amputees in Movies: True Stories, Real Representation, and Surprising Film Roles
If you’re looking for amputee representation in film, this is a good place to start.
Movies Based on Real Amputees
These stories tend to be the most well-known, and for good reason. They highlight real experiences, challenges, and comebacks.
Soul Surfer
Bethany Hamilton’s story after losing her arm in a shark attack and returning to competitive surfing. This one is a go-to for a lot of people.
127 Hours
Aaron Ralston’s survival story after being trapped by a boulder in a Utah canyon. It’s intense, but it shows just how far the human body and mind can go.
I just watched this in honor of #LLDAM and it made me cry. Really powerful story about Aaron’s survival.
Centers around the life of wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with one leg and won a national championship in 2011 while competing at Arizona State University.
The Terry Fox Story
A biopic about Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope across Canada. Fun fact: the actor who played him was also an amputee and lost his leg in a similar way.
I watched this back in 2017 and wow wow wow. this story is so incredible. I was fortunate enough to take a trip to Canada that year and see one of his statues on his route!

Stronger
Follows Jeff Bauman after the Boston Marathon bombing as he adjusts to life as a double amputee and the unexpected attention that comes with it.
Men of Honor
The story of Carl Brashear, the first Black U.S. Navy diver, who returns to duty after an amputation. It’s as much about persistence as it is about identity.
Movies Featuring Amputees or Limb Difference
Not every film is about amputation. Sometimes it’s just part of the character, which honestly matters too.
Skyscraper
Dwayne Johnson plays a former FBI agent with a below-knee amputation. He uses a prosthetic throughout the film while still being the action hero.
Mad Max: Fury Road
Furiosa has a mechanical prosthetic arm and it’s never treated as something that holds her back.
How to Train Your Dragon
By the end of the film, Hiccup has a prosthetic leg. It’s subtle, but representation like this sticks with people.
This is a children’s movie, but my husband and I absolutely loved it!
The Fugitive
Features a one-armed character as part of the central plot. Not exactly positive representation, but still notable.
When Hollywood Uses Real Amputees
This is the part a lot of people don’t realize.
There’s an organization called Stunts Ability, created by R. David Smith, that helps people with limb differences get into the film industry. What some people see as a limitation has actually created opportunities for very specific roles and effects.
Predator 2
R. David Smith worked as a stuntman in one of his first major roles here.
The Thing
There’s a famous scene where a character’s arms are bitten off. That effect was done using a double amputee actor with prosthetic arms designed to break away. For its time, it was wild.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Steven Spielberg used amputees as part of the “Flesh Fair” scenes instead of relying entirely on CGI.
Starship Troopers
Amputees were used in battle scenes to realistically portray injuries.
Spider-Man 3
Features Baxter Humby, a one-armed Muay Thai fighter known as “The One Armed Bandit.” He grew up wanting to be Spider-Man and ended up in the film.
A Few More Worth Mentioning
If you’re going down the rabbit hole, these are also worth adding to your watch list:
Million Dollar Baby
Includes amputation as part of a major turning point in the story.
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Gazelle uses blade prosthetics as weapons. Definitely more stylized, but memorable.
Final Thoughts
Amputee representation in movies isn’t one thing. Sometimes it’s inspiring, sometimes it’s exaggerated, and sometimes it’s just… there.
All of it shapes how people see limb loss and limb difference, including how we see ourselves.
If you have a movie I missed, I’m always looking to add more.
